Waste Processing SOP

1 – Purpose 

California Waste Services ensures safe processing and sterilization of all regulated medical waste before disposal. This SOP outlines procedures to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, prevent contamination, and ensure safety for employees and customers.


2 – Scope 

This SOP applies to all medical waste collected, transported, and processed by California Waste Services, including sharps, biohazardous, and other regulated medical waste.


3 – Responsibilities 

Medical Waste Services Staff – Follow waste processing and sterilization procedures. 

Supervisors/Managers – Ensure proper training and equipment maintenance. 

Compliance Officer – Verify adherence to ADEQ and OSHA regulations.


4 – Process 

Collection & Transport 

Medical waste is collected in DOT-approved, leak-proof containers, labeled, and logged. 


5 - Receiving & Sorting 

Containers are inspected for damage and compliance; waste is sorted by type. 


6 - Treatment & Sterilization 

Sharps and biohazardous waste undergo high-temperature steam sterilization (250–300 °F) and may receive secondary
